A SCMP column by Christine Lo on the planned Hong Kong-Macau-Zhui bridge asks the excellent question: what are our officials doing with Lantau Island?

She notes that much has been promised for the bridge but:
There has been very little in-depth examination of these claims as to how the benefits would be delivered, and hardly any deliberation about alternatives and opportunity costs. .. The public is being asked to accept the spending of vast sums of money on its construction in good faith.

..officials are working to load up the accessible parts of Lantau with a very large logistics park that does not appear to be needed .. many more homes are being planned for Tung Chung. ...why are we planning to put more people under jets' flight paths once more?

She doesn't mention, but might have, the Lantau Development plan of three years ago. Not a great plan, but at least accepting we need one. In the face of this government indifference it's no wonder we are constantly battling (and not very successfully) to retain community services.
